I posted without being through in my research.  I found that if you go into the recalbox.conf file, there is an option for PS3 compatibility.  The default option is set for 'original'.  I changed this to 'shanwan' and was able to register the devices via bluetooth and then set them up as regular controllers.

Changing the driver solved the issue! Thank you very much! I'll get another power supply for a usb-port/a powered usb-hub, didn't know that the rainbow square indicates a lack of power. 🙂

what exactly dont you understand? this is a noob version imo and i got it working in 20 mins. only thing i struggled with was to save at the end.
