Raspberry Pi 3B+ (Plus) - Compatible?
-
@hex12 ain't nuttin' voljega shared a benchmark showing some interesting improvements. Gralicek2 said they can ve nicely overclocked. So all in all, you could reach 1.5Ghz, maybe 1.6. I can't tell if it's good improvement, and we sadly have no benchmark suit available (tjat's something i'd love to write but we lack devs)

take a look at this little review:

i've received today my new pi3 b+. libreelec and raspbian works. recalbox not.
@substring you got your pi3 b+ already? im so hyped to test the new performance on recalbox.
-
@dizell we have an internal build working fine on pi3+, needs some fixing here and there, nothing bad. The real problem is that we can't include it in the current build as any kernel update would brick recalbox. Working hard on finding a solution without forcing people to reinstall from scratch

Thanks for your amazing work.
But don't worry, reinstall from scratch is not a big deal! -
Same for me, New Pi 3B+, and new fresh install to go with it! I have this obsession that new installs are always better than upgrades! I have the same thinking when updating my IOS devices
Thanks for all the hard work guys, appreciated

Pi3b+ forces us to switch to kernel 4.9 (we're on 4.4), and in the coming weeks, raspberry should switch for good on 4.14. So we can't always get that late comparing to official kernel releases. That's also forgetting the x86 kernel release cycle is much faster ...
So i'm working on a new update process
-
that's a good thing to know that a internal version of recalbox works with R3B+
I'm building a second bartop and I'd like to use the new raspberry pi 3B+
it's quite irrelevant to install recalbox from scratch since you always advised to use usb drive to store roms, of course it takes longer to load but I think it's worth the wait at every boot: I can manage my roms on a usb drive directly (adding and more often deleting titles from a full set, I know I should own the originals and so on)I tried retropie since the beta is compatible with P3B+ and to my humble opinion although it's really nice to be able to set every thing, I really appreciate the simplicity of recalbox
Thanks for your efforts guys, I'm looking forward to installing recalbox on a new R3B+
-
@kazki agreed, how much longer does it take to load from USB? Twice as long, 3 times as long?, maybe I should try and find out for myself , yes the very thought of trying to get all the roms off my memory card, to do a new build for 3B+ when it’s available fills me with dread. Time to invest in a decent Nano USB memory stick!

i just chronometered
it took about 1min25sec to boot from usb drive on (i used a USB3.1 64GB Sandisk USB drive Sandisk Ultra fit newest version)
compared to under 30 sec with a Sandisk Ultra micro sd cardIt can take a while to transfer roms through ethernet I think it's easier to manage my roms library from usb drive. That's not really the subject here so I won't develop
-
@kazki true, thanks I’ll give it a whirl

I just bought my RP 3 B + put the latest Recalbox and did not work( no booting).
Do you know if there is a way to make it work ?
Thanks! -
@Marcos-Filipe-Pereira
you need to wait an update major of recalbox. thank you for reading all the answers of this topic@substring said in Raspberry Pi 3B+ (Plus) - Compatible?:
@gkralicek2 it's not a noobs problem, it's a firmware + kernel problem. Recalbox img most probably can't boot for these reasons. And for noobs : we're not yet compatible as we need the new board's id

you need to wait an update major of recalbox. thank you for reading all the answers of this topicHello, do you have an approximate date a major update to have support for RPi 3 B +?
-
@simba51 sorry no date will be given.
-
Thank you for your reply. I'll be happy then ...
-
No date? Then it can only be hours.....
joking
Did you allready tried to compile a 64 bit version for test purposes?

On pi ? What for ? They hardly support 64bits

@kazki
In my point of view it's not really necessary to store ROMs on an external USB drive.
I've included whole "share" directory (containing ROMs, BIOS files, etc.) to my backup script. So if I have to reinstall Recalbox, I simply copy back needed files from my backup storage to new Recalbox installation.
If my microSD card breaks of any reason, as the same can happen with external USB drive, I can also use this backup. (Good because I've spent days to optimize gamelists, ROMs, etc.)
Adding/removing content using network share is also quite comfortable, at least by using LAN connector instead of WiFi. Same with editing gamelist metadata directly by using an editor - here the only annoying thing is having to stop/start emulationstation in shell each time.
