      I'm using a logitech controller where A is swapped with B and same with X and Y...so, backwards from the SNES style configuration ES uses. I can do it the other way around when customizing inputs but then the labels at the bottom don't match up correctly. I've also tried changing the inputs in Retroarch and haven't had much luck. Any help?

        Nope, you should map your controller according to a SNES layout and get use to it.

          Well when the screen says press B to select and it's actually A on the controller, that's not very helpful. This system is meant to be user friendly to people other than me. I figured out that "On-screen Help" means these button labels and they can be turned off but it's not ideal. The image files aren't somewhere that I can just swap the file names or something?

            I don't know about the images... I'm not a developer. But do you know how many systems are emulated? Well, a bunch! And do you know how many different controller layout exist? Too many! The user-friendliness has some limits if you don't want to buy the original control for every system you play. Just get use to it, and if not... Trial and error my friend! But that's only my opinion. If you have two different controls, what then? After the third time you realize pressing A isn't reacting as expected, you will be trying with B 😉

              There is an open PR on GitHub which deals with exactly that. A controller related button layout in the ES help system.

                @Nachtgarm that PR needs a much better integration. Like, when mapping a pad, ask "what is the layout of your pad ? PS2 ? XBOX ? SNES ? Other ?" and then show buttons accordingly

                @Matt-Bauler The rule is simple and has been told many times : stick a a SNES pad layout. Only the buttons position matters 🙂 The wiki is quite clear about that 🙂

                  @subs @Nachtgarm ,

                  imo we should just have a choice in UI Settings and let the user choose what he wants to display. Would be too complicated to do smthg based on what is plugged or not.

                  SNES, XBOX and PS are the most common.

                    @supernature2k wether it's hard or not, it's not the question. The fact is that you can't lock ES to "ONLY" different layouts. Or we should just always match the 3 different buttons everytime one needs to be displayed ... Blaaaaa ... just RTFM here for PS3 and here for XBOX
