ODROID-XU4 vs ODROID C2 vs Raspberry Pi 3
-
@Substring I'm thinking about buying a Odroid since it have more power for N64 and Dreamcast. The problem is that I use Kodi heavily for my home entertainment center and :
- C2 seems to have problem with Dreamcast ? (not playable ? slow as a PI3 but playable ?)
- XU4 doesn't have hardware video decoding
My questions :
- XU4 : Even without hardware video decoding, will I be able to play a 12-15 Giga-bytes movie in 1080p and DTS-7.1 ?
Thanks !

@patriccote well ...
the C2 can't play reicast because the assembly part of the dynarec is written for ARM, not ARM64.Regarding the XU4 + Kodi, i'll try to test and report
-
@Substring As I can see, nothing's perfect =(
-
Does reicast might eventually works on a C2 or is it impossible because of hardware limitation ? Is it possible in a year or two to see reicast support for ODROID C2 ?
-
Anybody else intensively using an Odroid XU4 with Kodi ? Are you able to play 1080p big file (10-15 Gigabytes) with DTS 5.1 - 7.1 without slowdown ?
Thanks !

@patriccote As you may not have understood, the reicast stuff for the C2 is something quite complex as assembly is the CPU language. One should translate ARM assembly to ARM64 assembly, this is no fun.
-
@Substring that is why my question was : "is it an hardware limitation or not ?" The answer seems to be no ... BUT ! ... I understand now that the task is huge and will surely never be done (I won't hold my breath on that one
To anyone else (including Substring of course =), if you have update on the performance of ODROID-XU4 and Kodi, I will gladly appreciate before buying on of them !!!
Thanks !

@patriccote maybe @Dragu or @abunille can report their exprience here
-
I will make a test this weekend with my 5.1, before unfortunately impossible.

Hello, first pls be patient with my grammar, im from Germany and my school english is not the best in this case. i plan to buy a XU4 and i only need it to emulate SNES, PSX, PSP, N64 and Dreamcast. My question is, how its about NDS? Atm i have a RPI3 and the most things run ok for me, but N64, PSP and Dreamcast have not so good fps. Will the XU4 help me on this point or in a short question does the XU4 worth it?

oh yeah ! It's the most powerful board we've ported recalbox to.
-
@patriccote quickly tested a 1080p mkv, worked fine.
-
@substring thank you for the fast answer, helps me a lot
-
@backpaddle now i haven't tested the XU4 in every possible bench, but from my short experience, it runs pretty fine
-
@substring i know that single games can make problems, so its ok, thank you
-
@Substring Thanks for the test, it now seems like the perfect solution ! Question, what was the size of the movie you have tested ?
I will still wait from @Dragu and @abunille tests before buying a ODROID-XU4. If anybody else using this board have tested high definition 1080p (5.1, 7.1) movies under Recalbox 4.1.0 / Kodi 16, please tell me !
Thanks !

@patriccote The file was 9.4GB, 1920x1072 H264 High profile, DTS 5.1
-
@Substring This is the kind of file I use so if you report no lag watsoever, it's good for me !
If anybody else wants to add the result of their own tests, it would be great !

@patriccote I wasn't on a TV to compare and say "it does work perfectly". It looked fine, can't tell much more, i haven't spent that much time with it. I don't even know where to find the h/w acceleration info in Kodi
-
@Substring As I understand, since ODROID-XU4 does not have hardware acceleration, Kodi should run in 'software' mode by default. I don't think you have to find the "hardware acceleration" option to do a good test.
For your information, you can find the option somewhere under "System" - "Playback" ...
Thanks !

@patriccote
I have no Xu4 yet, but there seems to be some sound quality issues, just what I heard. Because Xu4 has no i2s interface as Raspberry has, so no direct DAC sound possibility. -
@Dragu I use my Raspberry Pi 2 as a home Entertainment center, plugged in my Yamaha receiver using the HDMI cable and the receiver decode the AC-3 / DTS signal through the "bypass" command of Kodi. I cannot bypass DTS-ES / DTS-HD with my Rpi2 / Kodi 15 but I can with a Western Digital "WD TV Live".
- Do you think I will have problems bypassing sound to my receiver ?
- Note that I know nothing about the i2s interface / direct DAC, can you explain this to me ?
Thanks !
