hdmi laptop cutoff screen

Hi im new forgive me, I have usb stick with recal on it , i have my roms on a 1tb hdd and its connected to my acer laptop. I connect the laptop to my panasonic tv through hdmi and half the screen cuts off. I have looked at similar posts and tried as much as i could to my knowledge to get this fixed. I dont know how to run command through linux if that is possible on a pc. please help and direct me i would greatly appreciate it.

@bizmoan hello to switch to cmd mode starts your recalbox then you press F4 the menu recalbox will disappear then you do ctrl + alt + F2 you log and you can enter commands for your case xrandr will be useful

So i got to the point where i needed to download the ftp clients i downloaded a couple such as filezilla and winSCP and I cant connect even after connecting wifi to recalbox. Im at a loss was trying to get this done for the holidays and play with family.

Any help is greatly appreciated
