Update RetroArch, is it possible? How to do it?

I saw that the 1.6.7 version of RetroArch was released. Is it possible to update the RetroArch that already comes in Recalbox?

I am using Recalbox in a Pi3, I am in version 4.0.2, the RetroArch that has in it is version 1.3.4, I believe it is quite old compared to version 1.6.7.

Can you update? Does it have much difference and improvements? Maybe in speed and functionality?
