Movies/Music files missing in Kodi

I've just noticed that since I updated to 4.1 unstable the files in my kodi folder are not recognized. I have them on an external HD in their representive "movies" and "music" folders but they don't show up in kodi. Maybe kodi is looking for these on the SD card, but then how do I make it point to my HD? It used to work without any problem before the update, where the kodi version was 15.x.
