controller not working in Kodi

hi, im relatively new to recalbox ive managed to get it all setup and working fine on a raspberry pi 2 with roms from external HDD, now i want to setup kodi..
but my controller isnt working (a/b/x/y buttons work, d-pad doesnt). ive setup the control multiple times in recalbox (as per instructions in both this forum and the wiki) but no matter what i do the d-pad..keyboard works..but i dont always have it plugged in..
the controller is a gamerpi snes wannabe..
i thought maybe kodi isnt reading the config from the HDD, so i set recalbox back to internal, redefined the controls, and started kodi, but i still have the exact same results...
does any one have any ideas how to fix it? (it worked fine on the older version of recalbox!)

@wackedman i don't know much about the kodi pads setup. I just know it's very hacky, and i don't want to spend time on this knowing we should start the public beta for the next recalbox major upgrade in less than a month, and it will feature a much improved joystick manager

KODI v16 gives problems with controllers if you do not use any keymap but KODI v17 works without problems with any controller

@quemandoacromo recalbox will try to autoconfigure pads in kodi 17 may need a patch here and there though

@substring I think it is not necessary, KODI 17 automatically detects all controllers... Dualboot of Recalbox with OpenELEC works without problems, the controllers are configured automatically
