Remove keyboard and no sound

I setup my system with a keyboard connected that had audio controls (mute, volume etc). After getting the system running the way I wanted with just arcade controls I removed the keyboard. On the next reboot system I had no audio, many reboots later (troubleshooting the audio) I plugged the keyboard back in and played with the mute and volume controls and audio came back? I have replicated this multiple times to make sure it really was behaving this way.

Any suggestions on how I can run the system without the keyboard attached, but have the audio come on full volume with no muting. The audio settings on the keyboard (driver?) seem to completely override the audio settings built into RecalBox, and when the keyboard is not there, it's muted and the RecalBox settings have no effect.
