Two questions regarding installation and button mapping
-
Hello all,
I am new to both Recalbox and the Pi all together. What I know thus far is what I have gleaned from the past 20+ hours of instructional videos and reading documents.
With that said, I recently purchased a rpi3b+ with hopes to run Recalbox, however yes I am aware this is being worked on still.
In the mean time, I have two questions that I just can't seem to find answers to...
-
I have seen two methods of loading Recalbox for the first time, and was wondering which one was correct...
a) Should I etch the 18.07.13 (newest at the time of writing this) image to the SD card OR...
b) Should I head over to GITHUB and install the much older version 4 release from the ZIP file? (Copy files to SD card) -
I am wanting to mainly build my cabinet to support Mame games. Looking at other user setups, I see some have buttons for "Player1/2" and "COIN" buttons. Is there a way to specifically map these keys to mean just that? (Coin and P1/2), or do they simply bind "select" to Coin, and something else to P1/2? Does that make sense?... What I am trying to say is in all the controller setup videos, I never see options for player 1 / 2 select and/or options for inserting coins other than the default of select. Id like to break those functions off to individual dedicated buttons. (Using an easyget board and buttons)
Thanks!

@askeptic hi, and welcome on board (hahaha what a pun !)
- -> a. Or just wait that we release the testing image for 3b+ (or the stable release that will support it)
- When mapping pads, we ask start and select buttons. Select is used as the coin button on arcade/neogeo

@Askeptic
With button mapping, apart from fixed Gpio layout, I think best way is to connect them in a logical order, first not caring about later use. Just 1,2,3,4,5...that you can find them back easy.
After in ES, you can redefine them after there final destinations. I made it like this, and on the picture you see what I mean.

Thank you kindly! That answered both my questions perfectly.
Can't wait for the testing image I love how Recalbox "just works" when dealing with inputs and features. For lite users like myself, this makes projects like this possible. -

Thanks! That is a nice looking cabinet you have there! Did you craft that yourself or was that a kit purchased from somewhere?
Also, I see you tied your P1/2 coins to the same button, I suppose it doesn't matter when playing single player if player 2 never tags in. Only time I can think of this being questionable is xmen.. I know I like to die out so I can switch characters often where the other player may not feel the same way. Overall though that is a beautiful cabinet and I appreciate you sharing it with me. -
@Askeptic
Its not really mine, I just used it for layout, but I bought a kit covered in black melamine from him, it was coming from Brexit, Rich's Bartop :
