    • Background music freezes after a few hours

      Hi all.

I am running the latest recal box w/recent updates, and this problem has persisted since the initial 4.0 release for me.
I have an external USB audio box that I run my sound through, and I am not sure if that's the cause of this or not, but after the recalbox sits for a few hours unused, the background music basically freezes with a stuttering loop. E.g. whatever the last music note was it just replays it in a frozen manor.

I can restart the raspi3 this is installed on and it returns to normal. Sometimes if I start a game, the audio fixes itself, and sometimes it won't requiring a restart.

Anyone know what the cause and fix might be here?

    • RE: Some MAME Games Have Crackling/Static In Audio

Well, looks like I solved it myself.

I believe it was largely due to inadequate power. Purchased a USB power brick with the certified ratings for the pi 3 b+ and it's a world of a difference.

      Must have been throttling before.

Another observation; static in audio with SNES games.
It's like it throttles down randomly and then stutters and then is fine for another 30 seconds and then starts again.

      Any hints/tips?

    • Some MAME Games Have Crackling/Static In Audio

      Hi all.

I think this issue has to do with the audio sampling rate, but I can't for the life of me figure out where to change it for MAME (using default/deault settings for core and emulator).

When playing games, mainly the Capcom ones like Marvel Vs and Darkstalkers, and even on Mortal Kombat, I noticed that while the game play is smooth, the audio gets staticky and crackles here and there.

I delved into the depths of google and came up with what I suspected, which is it seems related to the audio sampling settings. From all I can tell it LOOKs like the audio is defaulted to 48khz if I am not mistaken, but it may need to be kicked down to 40 or 44 for these games.

I can't figure out where to set it though,. When digging through config files I only saw one entry somewhere randomly for audio sampling but it wasn't related to MAME.

Any clue as to what config file and where in it and what line to use to specify the desired sample rate, or another/better fix for the audio issue?

Edit: a bit more digging shows that the main file to hit up is retroarch.cfg . I edited the default audio sampling rate to 441000 and the ms delay to 256 and that seems to have largely cleared up the static. Maybe noticing a tiny bit here and there.

So other questions now, is that the only place to consider changing? What about the auto generated mame settings in the core files where it's always set to 48000? Where does that come from?

Also is there anything pertinent to change as far as the audio driver goes in the retroarch config file? There are options like alsa, sdl, etc. Not sure if it's worth changing and if so then to what?

Additionally, is there a trick to getting surround sound enabled? I have stereo (2.1 really with the sub) but it would be nice to get that center channel at least, if not the surround. Always sounds so much nicer.

      Appreciate any feedback.

Getting the hang of things, just need some additional guidance.

    • RE: Folder name alternatives?

@voljega I did initially, but ran into some issues. The one plus with Retropie was being able to force one of a dozen emulators for a specific game.

      But I digress.

I found my reference set for the 078 roms and copied them back over to the MAME folder overwriting the ones I had generated from clear mame and it works much better now.

I do notice on some games the sound is staticy though with MAME. Not sure why that is yet.

    • PSX - Piracy Warning on an ISO...any way around it?

For the record, I honest to universe own the actual game, and am trying to emulate it on Recalbox as my PSOne AV cord is missing in the wind at the moment.

I am tying to get Dragon Ball Z - Ultimate Battle 22 working, but when it loads up flashes the piracy warning and quits back to the main menu. Not sure entirely but wondering if it might be a region issue. I do have the SCPH bios in the BIOS folder for PSX, but again, not sure what it might be here.

Is there a suggestion like a specific BIOS that allows multi region, some sort of boot disc, etc.?

My other rom for Dragon Ball Final Bout works (again own the actual title).

      Appreciate any help.

    • Folder name alternatives?

I'm new to Recalbox and thus far, enjoying it, especially over Retropie, however I am running into some oddities and trying to wrap my head around the differences in ROM management.

In Retropie, there was an Arcade folder where I can toss my MAME 0.78 compatible roms into and have it play them accordingly . With Recalbox there is just the FBA and MAME folders. I created an Arcade folder in the ROMS directory, copied some ROMS over and tried to get it to pick them up, but to no avail.

The reason I am trying this is because it seems that Retropie used a slightly updated version of a MAME emulator that seemed to work much better for the rom set vs Recalbox. Recalbox only gives me the options for libretro and either imame4all or the other mame option (using the 4.0 release).

Trying to read through the guides and FAQs make it seem like there are supposed to be an array of emulator options but it's not clear at all to me on what is really available and how to basically get it to give me the option of using the other mame emulators...or if I can install others and use those or...?

Appreciate any help here. I have my other systems running just fine (NES, SNES, Genesis, etc.), and I have a handful of MAME roms I'd like to get running for myself and the kiddos to play.

    • [Solved] USB audio only playing in right speaker

      Hello all.

Recently I acquired a generic 5.1 USB audio adapter. It works as far as stereo on its own with Windows, etc but I'm running into issues with recalbox.

I have it connected via USB and basically set alsa-base.conf to use it first . After an initial reboot it detects and I can hear the background menu music playing but only over the right speaker. I can't hear the background sounds like menu selection etc. In the settings system volume is set to 0 and keeps defaulting to it.

I did an alsamixer from the command line and all channels are up correctly and not muted.

In name, audio again only plays from the right speaker. Cables are definitely good.

I can't figure out with recalbox where to fix this. Do I need to edit a config somewhere else to get the USB audio working or is the alsa base file not needed?

Edit: Solved it. Apparently my headphones are having some jack issues. Oye. Figures it starts when I start testing 🙂
I lugged my 5.1 creative speaker setup down to the basement and plugged in and it's all working as expected and sounds fantastic!
