Configure Sega Genesis emulator for 4 players

Hi!!! Well that's my question, can you configure the sega genesis emulator (I think it's the default Picodrive) to reconcile 4 gamepads ?? Within the retroarch options you can configure all the controls you want, but when you enter the game, it does not recognize more than 2 gamepads.
