using a 1tb external HDD with recalbox

I'd like to use this HDD instead of the internal SD card as I have a lot of ROMs, I believe my problem is that the HDD takes too long to start up so can someone please explain to me how to change the sleep timer so that the HDD is recognised and will create the proper folders.
