Slow image download (30min+) for RPi 3

Is there a tutorial for building a rpi 3 image from source? The gitlab download is pretty quick (I know its a lot smaller). How do I compile the image from source?

Tips to Fix Images Loading Slowly

Resize and compress images. If you want to speed up your images, you should always optimize your photos by resizing and compressing them.
Set image dimensions.
Serve images optimized for each device.
Lazy load your images.
Convert your images to WebP.
Use a caching plugin.
