How to add a new emulator?

I want to add Atari800 (either the unofficial libretro core or the standalone emulator like it's done with Dosbox).
I know I have to build my own recalbox for this. I already poked around the source code and tried to figure out how the buildroot works. However, I could not figure out how the buildroot fetches the source code for the emulators and where I should make my changes.
Can anyone guide me how to get started?
