S: what is the fastest codec able for UHD?

Hi,
i used a hdmi setting to display UHD (3840x2160@24fps) on the rpi3.
KODI is still working, movies (up to HD 1920x1080) are running fine.
Movies in UHD are broken (H264 - rpi hardwareregister has a max. 2560 pixel Limit )
VP9 (MKV) is working, buit damm slow.
Is there any other codec out there that is "fast" and able to handle 3840x2160?
