How to use N64 and PS1 cheats correctly?

I can use cheats in Snes, Mega Drive, Game Boy Advance games but i can't use them in Nintendo 64 and PlayStation games. When i apply the cheat nothing happens. I would like to know if, in the case of N64 and PS1 games, the cheats have an immediate effect when applied, as in Snes games for example, or is it necessary to apply the cheat, reset and start a new game? Another doubt; Is there any way to use the old Gameshark in Retroarch?
