overlays with hyperion

Hi!

first post, please bear with me ;-).

I am running the latest recalbox on raspi3 and have some ugly black borders right and left from the actual "game-scene".

I read a few articles which propose to use a "overlay" to get those black borders filled with something more stylish.

I am also using hyperion to get the ambilight like effect. hyperion is configured to detect black borders so the actual "game-scene" is rendered with my LED strip.
when adding a overlay, would my hyperion "realtime" effect be lost for right/left side of the screen? (I guess it would only show the colors of the overlay?)

I asked this question before actual used any overlay because I don't want to risk breaking my working setup. would be great to get your opinions on this.
