8bit Emulators

I hope this is in the right forum and not against the rules,
I'm wanting to create a custom RecalBox which will only house 8bit computers, once done then another for 16bit computers, long term I then plan to house them in the relevant old PC case, I know I can add ROMs which I can then select to play, is it possible to make the emulator when selected start up in its own O/S and from there you use the command prompts to open roms/software from a default location, but you can also use the basic? I'm not a big developer, just a lazy hobbyist with limited knowledge
