Is there a way to do this without relying on the front-end ?

Not for the moment, we need to practice stability tests before adding an overclock setting.

So I wouldn't be able to go into raspi-config from a prompt and do it myself ?

Any update on an OC option ? I opened this as a issue on github, and it was deleted by a mod. I wonder if this will eventually be addressed.

Hello Acres, would you know by chance if it can be manually done without the front-end ?

You can overclock via the configuration (hold shift when booting) and there are many examples out there where the cpu_free can be increased a little and the sdram freq upped to 500.  These settings work well. If I remember correctly there is a config file somewhere where you can predefine an overclock setting ( currently set as 'none')  I'll have a play and tell you what works well setting wise and where the configuration file is.
